The book is written in Danish
At the age of just 11, Pete Williams is arrested for the first time. He has grown up in a dockland neighbourhood in 1960s London, and it was a sure path to a criminal career. Even his parents were convinced that Pete would end up behind bars. However, a new social experiment for young criminals in London in 1974 became a turning point for young Pete, who did indeed steal a safe during his stay at The Hammersmith Teenage Project, as the social experiment was dubbed, but who also went on an arduous hike that changed his outlook on life.
In September 2018, he went on the same hike. He wasn't entirely sure why, perhaps to honour a recently deceased staff member at The Hammersmith Teenage Project who believed in him in his youth and helped him veer away from the otherwise predestined path to a life behind bars? Perhaps to better understand who he was? If so, he succeeded. For the first time ever, Pete Williams let go of his perpetual self-accusation for having spent too much of his life on anger, fights, confrontations, and violence, and instead allowed his subconscious to forgive him.
Født til Fiasko is Pete Williams' brutally honest story about growing up in a tough environment in London, where no one believed he would ever become anything other than another criminal thug. And a story about working as a roadie for, among others, the Sex Pistols and Smokie, driving all over Europe in a truck, being a British DJ in Danish discos in the 80s, having a child in Denmark, and fighting a bitter custody battle – and against all odds, landing in a safe, loving, and secure haven in the latter half of life.
